Coaching for All!!

In this age of rapid social categorization, we’ve become experts at dividing people—by gender, race, culture, ability, and sexuality. While these identifiers are important, they are not the be-all and end-all of who we are. But do we sometimes forget that? Are we too caught up in defining individuals by what makes them different from others rather than what unites us all?

The Boxes We Live In

We live in a world that speaks about diversity and inclusion more loudly than ever. Companies build entire departments around these ideals. Schools, workplaces, and even social media platforms promote the importance of recognizing each other's unique backgrounds.

But here’s where the irony sets in: while we claim to embrace diversity, we often let our special interest groups and identity categories limit how we see one another. We start thinking that certain ideas, values, or even life challenges belong to specific groups of people. It becomes, “This struggle is for them, not for me” or “This advice only works for those people.” It’s the very division that keeps us from seeing a more profound truth: we all want the same things.

This brings me to a crucial question: Are there no values, no shared ideas that transcend these differences? Ideas that can apply to anyone, regardless of gender, race, ability, or sexuality?

Shared Struggles, Common Goals

I think the answer is a resounding yes.

Here’s why: everyone I know has their inner demons to fight. Every person, at some point in life, has faced limiting beliefs that hold them back. Maybe it’s self-doubt, the fear of failure, or even a crippling sense of insecurity that was seeded during childhood. We all have something—those subconsciously loaded dialogues that run on autopilot, inserted into us by our upbringing or experiences. These challenges aren’t unique to one group; they’re universal.

And if we accept that these internal struggles are universal, then it follows that gaining a better understanding of them is also a universal need. So, here’s a provocative thought: does it really matter who the messenger is? Does it matter if your coach is of a different gender, ability, race, or culture? Is their message somehow diluted by the way they present or the category they belong to?

The Good Samaritan Lesson

Think about the parable of the Good Samaritan. For those who may not be familiar, the Samaritan was someone who was shunned by society at large during his time. Yet, when others ignored a man in desperate need of help, the Samaritan was the one who stepped in, offered compassion, and helped save a life.

The moral of the story isn’t just about kindness; it’s about how value transcends labels. The Samaritan’s worth, wisdom, and humanity weren't diminished by the societal rejection he faced. In fact, it amplified his story, leaving a lasting impression on generations of people worldwide.

So, what’s the lesson here? Value isn’t about fitting into a particular mold or ticking a box. It’s about the impact of the message and the actions that follow.

Breaking Free from Narrow-Minded Thinking

Let me introduce you to someone else—Tony Christiansen. He’s a successful motivational speaker, author, and adventurer, known for his incredible resilience and inspiring story. He’s also a double amputee. According to the narrow-minded, ‘special interest’ mindset, Tony, a man without legs, couldn’t possibly teach anything to those who have them, right?

Wrong. His wisdom and strength transcend his physical limitations. His story is one of grit, determination, and overcoming obstacles that anyone—legged or not—can relate to. His message of perseverance, overcoming adversity, and living life to the fullest isn’t restricted to a particular group. It’s for everyone.

This brings me back to the question: Have we evolved into a society that promotes diversity and inclusivity only in theory, while still operating along the lines of narrowly defined “special interests”?

If we’re truly honest with ourselves, we might realize that we’ve lost sight of the bigger picture. Inclusivity isn’t about making sure every group has a seat at the table; it’s about ensuring that everyone’s voice has the power to impact others, no matter where it comes from.

Universal Questions, Universal Aspirations

So, let’s get real for a second. Here are a few questions to ask yourself. If you can answer ‘yes’ to any of these, then maybe—just maybe—we are more alike than we are different. And these goals? They transcend gender, race, culture, sexuality, and ability. They’re human.

  • Do you wish to live a life that’s as fulfilled as possible?
  • Do you wish to overcome limiting beliefs that hold you back?
  • Do you wish you were more confident but don’t know where to start?
  • Do you want to be better organized and in control of your life?

Take a moment and think about it. Did any of those questions require you to be of a specific race, culture, gender, or ability to resonate with them?

No? Of course not.

That’s the beauty of these challenges—they don’t care about the box society has placed you in. They’re universal. These are the types of challenges every human faces at some point or another.

If you’re nodding along to any of this, welcome to the tribe. You’re part of something bigger, something that goes beyond labels and divisions. You’re a human being with shared goals, shared struggles, and the shared desire to overcome them. You belong here.
